Despite a £40 million bid rejection, Anthony Gordon's transfer to Chelsea is expected to be completed in the coming days
Chelsea could sign Anthony Gordon in the 'coming days,' according to reports, despite having had their initial £40 million bid rejected. Chelsea reportedly made a bid to sign Everton's highly rated forward over the weekend. Carlo Ancelotti gave Gordon a chance in Everton's first team before loaning him out to Preston.
Gordon, however, became a regular in Everton's starting lineup under Rafael Benitez last season, with Frank Lampard continuing to believe in the 21-year-old. He made his debut in January, scoring both goals for Everton in a 3-2 loss to Brighton, his first goals in the Premier League.
Because of Dominic Calvert-injury Lewin's and Richarlison's departure, Lampard has moved Gordon through the middle to serve as Everton's central striker. He has yet to score in the first two games, but he has shown promise in games against Chelsea and Aston Villa.
The Blues clearly saw enough potential last week, as they have now made a reported £40 million bid. The BBC reports that Everton have rejected Chelsea's opening bid, but the Toffees appear willing to negotiate.
Chelsea is expected to make an even higher bid in the near future, and a deal could be reached 'in the coming days.' The report also suggests that a player-plus-cash deal could be in the works given Everton's interest in both Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher.
Gordon is serving as Everton's makeshift No. 9 while Lampard searches for a replacement for Richarlison. Everton's only permanent signings this summer have been Amadou Onana, Dwight McNeil, and James Tarkowski, with Ruben Vinagre and Conor Coady joining on loan.
Everton still have Solomon Rondon available to play through the middle, but Lampard clearly wants to bring in another option.
"We are considering it [signing a striker]," he said earlier this week. "Because we should be able to replace a player like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is injured and arrives three days before the game." Because Solomon Rondon has been suspended, we are looking for players who can fill that role. The way we participated in the match, I thought we deserved someone in the middle putting the ball in the back of the net.”
