When Liverpool hosts Crystal Palace at Anfield on Monday night for their first home game of the year, they may make three adjustments. Following Darwin Nunez's contribution off the bench in the Premier League opener tie against Fulham last Saturday, Jurgen Klopp must make a significant choice.
Liverpool will be eager to start their new title challenge with a victory, but due to unexpected injuries, Klopp has been forced to make at least two personnel changes. Express Sport proposes a possible starting lineup for the Reds against Palace in Merseyside.
Alisson, goalkeeper
Nothing unexpected here. At Craven Cottage last Saturday, Alisson had little control over either of Aleksandar Mitrovic's goals as the game ended in a depressing 2-2 draw. Given that Ederson of Manchester City is already two points ahead of him in the race for the Golden Glove, he will be motivated to record his first clean sheet of the season this time.
Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, and Robertson on defense
Due to Joel Matip's injury this week, Klopp's defense is likely to see one alteration. Trent Alexander-Arnold will start at right defender, while Andy Robertson will line up on the left, both players aiming for their first league-season goals.
In Matip's absence, Virgil van Dijk is expected to continue playing at the center of the defense alongside a different center-back partner. Given that Ibrahima Konate is also ineligible, Joe Gomez may get the chance to make a rare Premier League debut.
The injury Thiago sustained against Fulham, which is expected to keep him out for the next six weeks, will be Keita Klopp's biggest worry heading into the Palace match for the midfield trio of Fabinho, Henderson, and Klopp. The Spaniard is also unavailable for selection, joining Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones.
Jordan Henderson should lead the team on the right of a three, with Fabinho starting at the base of Liverpool's midfield as usual. After recovering from the illness that prevented him from playing in the opening match in west London, Naby Keita might replace Thiago instead of Harvey Elliott or Fabio Carvalho.
Attack: Nunez, Salah, and Diaz
At Fulham, Mohamed Salah made a strong Premier League debut, contributing significantly to Nunez's first equalizer before tallying his own second equalizer. On the left side of the attack, Luis Diaz should remain in that position, but Klopp must make a crucial decision in the center.
And this is the right time for him to act. Nunez might be in line for his first competitive start for the Reds after coming off the bench for Roberto Firmino to score in both of Liverpool's games so far this season.
