According to former coach Leonel Pontes, Matheus Nunes has "characteristics" that could make him ideal for Premier League play as he gets ready to depart Sporting Lisbon for Wolves.
Those who have watched Nunes grow in Lisbon won't be too surprised by his impending Ł38 million move to England. He stunned everyone with his explosive acceleration and rocket-fueled running power as he broke free of his chrysalis.
But his final location has some people scratching their heads.
Liverpool, Manchester City, and other teams have recently been connected to Nunes. Instead, he will be joining a team that placed tenth in the Premier League last season and has lost all nine of its recent matches in England's top division.
Pontes believes Nunes may be making the right decision, despite Wolverhampton Wanderers' history of serving as a haven for young Iberian talent under Fosun.
Matheus Nunes will be acquired by Wolves from Sporting Lisbon.
Nunes' decision to join the Wolves is advantageous for him, not the team, because of the league. He will play in more intense matches and at a faster pace, according to Pontes, a former Sporting coach.
"Considering his characteristics, it will be quite beneficial for his evolution to have this. This football may be a good fit for him because he is a player that moves the ball quickly, plays with skill, covers ground, and has the potential to get into scoring positions.
"Nunes will play in one of the top leagues in the world with a roster full of talented players.
Maybe he's at the right level to make his presence known in the Premier League. Additionally, one day be able to see a premier English team.
Wolves have agreed to a club-record Ł38 million fee, which could go to Ł42 million, according to reports . This comes after West Ham's own attempt for the Portugal international, who was born in Brazil, was turned down.
