Cyril Nyarko, a Biomedical Engineer aged 27 years, has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for using a rented vehicle as collateral to collect a personal loan.
Cyril was, therefore, charged with defrauding by pretense, abetment to forge other documents, and altering false documents, but pleaded not guilty.
The court, presided over by His Honour Emmanuel Essandoh, granted Cyril bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with two sureties, of which one of them must be a public officer earning not less than GH¢1,500 a month.
The court granted the accused bail last week after the prosecuting officer, Inspector Eric Pobee, informed it that Cyril allegedly defrauded a businessman, Prince Sarkodie.
The police prosecutor told the court that on May 12, 2022, the accused person went to Prince to request a personal loan of GH¢27,000.00 to clear his excavator at the port for his small-scale mining business.
Inspector Pobee said the accused presented a Hyundai Elantra, with registration number GT-8626-21, and documents to the complainant as a form of collateral.
Unfortunately, he said, the accused person defaulted on the monthly payment of the loan and its interest.
The Prosecuting Officer indicated that during July this year, the complainant had information that the accused person had been arrested at the Dansoman Police Station, at which he became alarmed.
It was narrated to the court that the complainant went to the said police station to find out what had happened, and to his amazement, the accused had rented someone’s Toyota Rav 4 and forged its document, and used it to acquire a loan.
“The complainant became alarmed and decided to also check the authenticity of the document the accused person presented to him at DVLA, Accra. However, to his astonishment, the accused person used the same modus operandi to acquire the loan from him,” he added.
The complainant then reported a case to the police for investigations, and during the course, the police wrote a letter to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Accra, to check the vehicle authenticity of the documents, but the reply indicates that the document was forged.
On July 20, 2022, the accused person was rearrested for investigations, and he admitted the offense in his investigation caution statement and told police that he only gave the information to one Edward, a supposed “Goro Boy” at the DVLA, who managed to forge the said car documents for him to present to the complainant.
After investigations, the accused was charged with the offenses.
