Details about how OWASS boys caused havoc on campus have emerged.
On Friday, August 12, 2022, three boys identified as Opoku Ware Senior High School students allegedly attempted to steal a taxi cab from its owner.
The three boys, aged 17 to 19, were later apprehended for the crime by police in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement issued in response to the arrests, Owass management confirmed the boys' identities as students.
"After informing the headmaster, a delegation consisting of the Assistant headmaster (Administration), Assistant headmaster (Domestic), the school chaplain and counsellor, and the senior housemaster and his deputy were sent to the police station to determine whether or not the boys were OWASS students."
"When the boys were brought in for identification, it was discovered that they were, in fact, OWASS students." Akwasi Adu Donkor (BY 2) and Owusu Appiah Raphael were their names (BY 664). The third suspect, Asubonteng Osei Kwadwo (BY 76), was identified in a statement signed by the school's Disciplinary Committee Secretary, Agyemang Duah Bismark.
The three students had been withdrawn from the boarding house and had a history of deviancy and insubordination, according to the management.
"Akwasi Adu Donkor and Asubonteng Osei Kwadwo were expelled from the boarding house on the same day for the following offenses: breaking school rules at night; wearing inappropriate clothing in school; and fighting in school." Following this, both students were chronic absentees, and Adu Donkor was reported to the principal by his English teacher, Mr. Agyemang Duah Bismark. His parents were summoned to bring the boy to school, and he was warned not to repeat such behavior.
Asubonteng Osei Kwadwo, on the other hand, was brought before the Disciplinary Committee once more for assaulting a fellow student and was punished.
"Owusu Appiah Raphael was also removed from the boarding house for stealing from his colleagues at the dormitory on numerous occasions," the statement continued.
Despite leaving the boarding house, the students are said to have continued their deviant behavior.
According to the school, Owusu Raphael appeared before the disciplinary committee with four others "for wrongful entry into someone's house at TUC" and had also "been hiding in the dormitory despite his withdrawal from the boarding house."
"The day before his arrest, he was brought to D.C. for stealing tins of sardines at the dining hall and causing mayhem during supper time, despite the fact that he was a day student and did not have the right to eat supper at the school," said OWASS management.
Several attempts to reform the students failed, according to the school.
"Their parents have been invited to the school on several occasions to discuss their children's behavior." It is unfortunate to report that Raphael Owusu Appiah's father insulted and nearly fought the then-assistant headmaster, Mr. Akwasi Oduro Boateng.
"He claimed the Assistant Headmaster despised his son and wanted him removed from the school," according to the school.
The boys' arrest was described as sad by OWASS management, who emphasized that the boys, despite being students at the time of their arrest, were supposed to be in the care of their families, not OWASS.
Background
On Friday, August 12, 2020, the three arrested final year students allegedly sought the services of a taxi driver under the guise of going to the Lancaster Kumasi City, formerly Golden Tulip Hotel, in the Nhyiaeso suburb.
When the three boys arrived at Rattray Park, they convinced the driver to hand over the ignition keys or risk being stabbed.
The suspects and the driver engaged in a struggle for the keys. The vehicle eventually collided with a wall between the Ridge Police Station and the Royal Golf Park Junction. The incident drew onlookers, who assisted in the arrest of the suspects.
