MoFA rescues 431 Ghanaians stranded in the UAE.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration is putting plans in place to rescue 431 Ghanaians who have become stranded in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that the majority of our stranded Ghanaians who are currently being held at the Al Tawadi Medical Centre and the Immigration Centre were duped by unscrupulous agents who promised unattainable jobs in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.
According to the Statement, agents were paid substantial sums to facilitate the entry of prospective visitors into the UAE.
Three hundred and forty-one (341) males, eighty-eight (88) females, and two (2) children under the age of three are among the stranded Ghanaians.
The full statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is provided below.
The Ministry has been made aware of the detention of some Ghanaian nationals at the Al Tawadi Medical Centre and the Immigration Centre in Dubai.
According to the report, there were four hundred and thirty-one (431) Ghanaians at the medical center, including three hundred and forty-one (341) males, eighty-eight (88) females, and two (2) children under the age of three. In addition to an unspecified number of African migrants.
Following the above developments, officers from our Consulate-General in Dubai visited our stranded compatriots at the detention center and provided them with proximity consular assistance.
According to our investigations, the majority of our stranded compatriots were misled by unscrupulous agents who promised them unattainable jobs in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates; the agents were paid significant sums to facilitate the entry of the prospective travelers into the UAE.
They only found out later that the jobs they were promised did not exist. The lack of job opportunities in Dubai has frequently placed our compatriots in a precarious position, making them vulnerable and easy targets for arrest and detention by UAE law enforcement agencies.
In this case, the Ghana Consulate-General is in contact with the host officials to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens in detention centers.
Despite the fact that our stranded compatriots went to the UAE on their own volition, the Government of Ghana is collaborating with UAE authorities to effect the evacuation of our stranded nationals back to Ghana.
The Ministry would like to take this opportunity to warn prospective visitors to the Gulf Region about the nefarious activities of unscrupulous agents.
In the meantime, however, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of National Security are taking urgent action to deal with the activities of unnegotiated Travel Agencies.
