Students from Conti and Katanga halls clash in KNUST.

According to information reaching GhanaWeb, violence has erupted in parts of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, or KNUST.

It comes after clashes between residents of Unity Hall, also known as Conti, and University Hall, also known as Katanga Hall.

The cause of the fight is unknown at this time, but sources on campus say it began during the day.

According to social media posts seen by GhanaWeb, residents of the halls are pelting stones at each other while lighting fires.

A police officer and a vehicle are seen on the scene, with some vehicles' windows smashed.

Residents of Commonwealth and Sarbah Hall clash at UG

Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Hall residents at the University of Ghana recently clashed on Friday, August 5, and Saturday, August 6, 2022.

The conflict between the rival halls resulted in the destruction of several properties, including the burning of a car and the removal of a bust of John Mensah Sarbah.

Since the incident, the administration has prohibited all student gatherings and processions outside the hall precincts until further notice.

It has removed Commonwealth Hall's hall master and senior tutor from their positions for failing to cooperate with the investigation.

The hall has also been charged for the cost of Mensah Sarbah hall damage.

On August 16, agitated Commonwealth Hall residents dressed in red protested management's decision to suspend their hall master and senior tutor.

The situation necessitated the deployment of a large number of security personnel to the campus in order to maintain law and order and to prevent any clashes.

Meanwhile, GhanaWeb has learned that calm has been restored at KNUST, the scene of the incident, but police officers have been deployed and the military is on standby for reinforcement.
