An Accra Circuit Court presided over by Patricia Amponsah, yesterday sentenced four persons to a total of 80 years imprisonment on the charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery. The convicts would be serving 20 years each in prison.
This is the second time the same court but presided over by a different magistrate, Priscilla Dappah Mireku has sentenced the convicts on related offenses to prison. However, their earlier sentence was 17 years each.
The convicts, Ibrahim Muntari (29 and a driver), Evans Nuttey (27 and a driver), Abubakari Sadiq alias Frenchman (30 and an Okada rider), and Prince Ayitey (25 and a driver), were jailed for attacking and robbing mobile money vendors.
According to Chief Inspector John Gohoho, Charity Antwi Andoh is the complainant and mobile money vendor residing at Sowutuom, adding that Ibrahim, Evans, Abubakari, and Prince reside at Olebu, Odumase, and Mankrong all in the Greater Accra region.
The prosecuting officer told the court that on March 8, 2020, the Amasaman Police Patrol Team arrested Ibrahim and one of their accomplices who is now deceased, Stephen Waja aka Sakibu alias Borsu, at Pokuase for the offense of Possessing a Firearm without Authority.
He said while the case was still under investigation, the Accra Regional Police on March 17 of the same year received intelligence that the suspects in the Amasaman police custody were among bandits who attacked mobile money vendors between 2019 and March 6, 2020.
C/Inspt Gohoho added that the Accra Regional police, therefore, requested that the two were sent to them for interrogations, and during interrogations, the suspects admitted the crime and mentioned Evans, Abubakari, and Prince as their accomplices.
He said the two suspects further confessed that they are the ones who attack and robbed the complainant at Pokuase.
The prosecuting officer narrated to the court before the convict's sentence that on March 18, 2020, Abraham led police to the residents of their accomplices, and they were arrested.
On March 20, 2020, the convicts led Police to Pokuase and pointed out the shop of the complainant as where they attacked her at gunpoint and robbed her of her bag, which contained her money, mobile phones, and recharge cards.
The prosecuting officer added that after the suspects successfully robbed the complainant, they went to Olebu in a taxi driven by Abrahim and shared the money.
He said the complainant identified Stephen immediately upon seeing him as one of her attackers and stated after investigation, the accused persons were charged with the offenses and brought before the court.
