Sergino Dest's agent clears the air on Manchester United speculation
Sergino Dest's agent has provided an update on the Barcelona defender's future, amid reports that Manchester United are interested in signing the full-back.
According to ESPN, Xavi has told Dest that if he wants to play regular football next season, he should look for a new club.
According to the report, Dest was initially told he could be used as cover for Jordi Alba, but has now been told "he can leave due to a change in the side's intended style of play and the club's ongoing financial pressure."
Manchester United are reportedly interested in the full-back, but journalist Jonathan Shrager spoke with his agent and says there are no offers for the USMNT star.
If any offers come in, Barcelona is thought to be eager to offload Dest. Ajax paid €20 million for the full-back, and Barcelona is hoping for a similar fee for the 21-year-old.
Manchester United have stepped up talks with USA defender Sergino Dest about a move away from Barcelona, according to Spanish publication Sport.
Dest has emerged as a top target for manager Erik ten Hag as the Red Devils look to sign a new right-back before the transfer deadline.
He was managed by the Dutch tactician during his debut season at Ajax in 2019/2020, and he is said to be a 'great advocate' of his signing this summer.
Meanwhile, Dest is aware that he must leave Barcelona in order to excel in his career and talks have ‘intensified’ with the Red Devils in recent hours.
Despite this, Barcelona will not let him go cheap, and will not sell him for less than €20 million. Juan Foyth of Villarreal could take his place.
Dest has the potential to become United's first-choice right-back.
Dest had a successful first season at Ajax in 2019/2020. Before his big-money move to Camp Nou, the youngster made eight goal contributions in 38 appearances.
He has since fallen short of expectations. Dest has played for Barcelona in a variety of positions, including right-back, right wing-back, left-back, and right winger.
The 21-year-old will be looking for a consistent position in the future, and Ten Hag believes he can be a 'important player' for the Red Devils.
Ten Hag would rather prefers to operate with full-backs that are attack-minded and can make regular overlapping runs. However, he also wants strong distributors with a good defensive resolve.
