Georginio Wijnaldum suffers a leg injury in training and faces a stressed wait.
Georginio Wijnaldum, the Netherlands global midfielder, has only finally begun his first summer with Roma after being brought in from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
Recently departed Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum will be out for a while after breaking his leg in training, according to Roma.
The midfielder only merged to form the Giallorossi this past spring, having finished a loan move from PSG after making great efforts to secure the deal. He made his debut from the bench in a win over Salernitana last weekend, but now must wait to find out how long he will be out.
He will not play against recently appointed Cremonese on Monday, according to Jose Mourinho. And Roma have provided an update on the player, who was hoping to represent the Netherlands in the upcoming World Cup.
"Injury rehabilitation experienced during training this noon, Georginio Wijnaldum undertook medical tests, which revealed the presence of a cracking to the tibia in his right thigh," Roma said in a comment. "The player will be evaluated further in the coming days. GO, GINI!"
It's unfortunate timing for the 31-year-old. Wijnaldum struggled for minutes at PSG after joining from Liverpool last season, starting only 18 games in Ligue 1.
Mourinho's media conference down that route of the Cremonese game came before the news of Wijnaldum's injury became public. However, the manager took the opportunity to praise another midfielder, Nicolo Zanilo, who had been linked with a move to the Premier League earlier in the transfer market.
"Zaniolo appears to be very sharp and physiologically agile, as it is difficult for a player of his caliber to maintain that intensity for 90 minutes." "According to Football Italia, the chairperson indicated. "He deserves respect for his dedication to training and motivation.
"Whether he stays or not is a question for the director, not me." Obviously, if you ask me, I'd like him to stay. He is an important player for all us, a key piece of the puzzle that brings all of our players' characteristics together."
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Zaniolo, with Antonio Conte rumored to be a fan. The Italian scored the game-winning goal in Roma's Europa League final victory over Feyenoord in May, and Spurs reportedly opened fresh talks with the 23-year-old earlier this month with a view to bringing him to north London this spring.
