The Head of University Relations, Daniel Norris Bekoe, has said that old students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who participated in the recent riot on campus, will have their certificates revoked.
Speaking on TV 3 on August 19, 2022, the Head of University Relations said the university's CCTV cameras captured the faces of most of the rioters and they will face the wrath of the school's rules and regulations.
According to him, the school's alumni who took part in the riot suffer a chance of having their certificates revoked.
“We will revoke their certificates. The alumni caught involved in this will have their certificates revoked," he said.
He said some of the rioters also came from the Casely Hayford Hall at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and investigations have been initiated to apprehend them.
“I can confirm that we are picking a lot of individuals who took part in it, we have identified some of them and we are going to hand them over to the Police. Some of them came from the University of Cape Coast, Casley Hayford Hall, numbering 40," he said.
Meanwhile, the University Hall, also known as Katanga, he said, will pay for the damages caused to all vehicles.
“The vehicles belonging to staff will be fixed and Katanga students will bear the cost, nine vehicles,” he said.
Background
The University Hall and the Unity Hall in KNUST clashed on Thursday, August 18, 2022, during the former's Hall week celebration.
The riot rendered nine vehicles said to belong to the University's staff damaged.
Following the riot, the Executive Committee of the University on Friday, August 19, indefinitely suspended all hall week celebrations.
It took the intervention of the security service to restore calm and serenity in the university.
About a week before the KNUST riot, students from the Commonwealth Hall and the Mensah Sarbah Hall on the University of Ghana's campus clashed.
Properties such as cars parked in front of the Sarbah Hall were destroyed by the rioters.
The Commonwealth Hall was surcharged by the University's management to fix all damaged properties.
