Many people with s*xually transmitted infections (STIs) do not get symptoms, so it' s worth getting tested even if you feel fine. If you think you have an STI, the earlier you' re tested, the sooner treatment can be given if it' s needed.

An STI can be passed from one person to another through s*xual contact, including v*ginal and oral s*x.

STIs can pass between men and women, and from women to women and men to men.

For more specific s*xual health advice, read women who have s*x with women and s*xual health for men who have s*x with men.

Antibiotics are effective in treating several STIs. While there is no known cure for some, like HIV, they can be treated to stop them from getting worse.

If you have had unprotected s*x or believe you could be at risk, it' s crucial to be checked out because you cannot tell if someone has an illness by looking at them (even yourself).

Symptoms

Many people, including the majority of women with chlamydia, do not have symptoms while they have a STI.

Chlamydia can hinder your ability to conceive if it is not treated.

Additionally, gonorrhea might impact fertility. 10% of men and 50% of women with gonorrhoea exhibit no symptoms at all.

STIs can have an impact on your health if not addressed. Get evaluated if you experience any of the symptoms below.

STIs In both women and men:

> pain when you pass urine (pee)

> itching, burning or tingling around the genitals

> blisters, sores, spots or lumps around the genitals

> black powder or tiny white dots in your underwear– this could be droppings or eggs from pubic lice

Common STIs In women

> yellow or green v*ginal discharge

> discharge that smells

> bleeding between periods or after s*x

> pain during s*x

> lower abdominal pain

Common STIs In Men

> discharge from the p*nis

> irritation of the urethra (the tube urine comes out of)

It' s worth seeing a doctor so you can find out what' s causing the symptoms and get treated, even though these symptoms don' t always indicate you have a STI.

For instance, thrush can still cause STI- like symptoms like pain, itching, and discharge even if s*x isn' t involved.
