It was a busy transfer deadline day for Chelsea as they signed forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for £10.3m and midfielder Denis Zakaria on loan from Barcelona and Juventus respectively.

The former Arsenal striker and Gabon international Aubameyang, 33, scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for Barca after joining the Spanish club for free in February from Arsenal.

Also in the same deal, Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso has left Chelsea by mutual consent and will sign for Barcelona.

Aubameyang has 100m euros (£83.4m) as the buyout clause in his contract when he signed for Barca, but due to the competition in the attacking squad, he has only played eight minutes this season. Barcelona have been keen to offload players after spending sphere close to £200m on new arrivals despite being more than £1bn in debt.

This is the first transfer window after the new Chelsea ownner took over having bought the club from Roman Abramovich, and with the addition of Aubameyang, Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly has already spent £255.3m on signings, making it the highest amount any English club owner has spent in their first transfer window.

Aubameyang after signing with Chelsea said: 'I'm really happy. It's an honour to be part of this team and I can't wait to start. I have some unfinished business with the Premier League so it's good to be back and really exciting.'

He scored 92 goals in 163 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, but left on a free transfer after falling out with manager Mikel Arteta.

Only four players have scored more EPL goals than the 68 of Aubameyang during his days at Arsenal.

Boehly after securing the signing of Aubameyang said: 'Pierre-Emerick is an elite striker with a proven track record in the Premier League and his arrival strengthens our squad, giving us new attacking options. We are thrilled to have Pierre-Emerick on board with us in the new era at Chelsea and we're really looking forward to working with him.'
