The Akropong Magistrate Court in the Eastern Region presided over by His Lordship Nana Bruce has sentenced into prison custody three Fulanis for a total period of 180 years.
The three accused Fulanis were found guilty of all three charges against them. They were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, armed robbery, and murder.
Giving the facts of the case to the court, Police Prosecutor DSP Osei Boateng said the suspects were six in the number who had been terrorizing traders along the Kwahu, Akuapem, and Afram Plains areas.
He said on the day of their arrest, the suspects had finished an operation at Mame Krobo where they blocked the main road and robbed traders of their belongings including money. Afterward, the suspected criminals went to a drinking spot at Akropong when one victim spotted them.
The informant alerted people around and quickly they surrounded the suspected criminals. Alas, two of them managed to escape while four were arrested.
Upon their arrest, DSP Osei Boateng said the police retrieved 2 pump action guns, 1 AK47 raffle, three mobile phones, 2 locally manufactured pistols, and cash amounting to 10,300 Ghana Cedis from the suspects.
It was also identified that about a month ago, some armed robbers blocked the Drobonso-Kumawu road and attacked innocent traders. In the course of the robbery, one of them shot a woman called Abena Donkor who died instantly. They also robbed the traders of their belongings after whipping them.
When the suspected Fulanis were arrested, the Police escorted them to Drobonso where some of the victims identified them as being part of the gang that carried out the deadly operations.
In his judgment, His Lordship Nana Bruce said the foreigners were illegal immigrants in the first place as they do not possess residents permit and other documents.
Secondly, they have been terrorizing Ghanaians who have given them a place of abode to the point of killing some of them. For this reason, he sentenced each of the 3 to a prison term of 60 years which makes a total of 180 years. The Judge ordered that their weapons be given to the police while the money is paid into the consolidated fund.
