The Hammers' first goal was scored by Michail Antonio as a result of Mendy's soft punch. Late in the game, Maxwel Cornet's equalizer was controversially disallowed because VAR cited a foul by Jarrod Bowen, giving the Senegalese a significant reprieve.
Mendy's performances have declined after helping Chelsea win the Champions League in 2021, and he then went on to represent his country at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Chelsea acknowledged Mendy's struggles and pledged to help the goalkeeper, who they believe is just having a bad run of luck.
After the game, Tuchel told reporters, "I think at the moment he [Mendy] is a bit unlucky in what he is doing.
He excels in training and is, in general, a very composed, self-conscious person who is aware that he is currently experiencing a bit of bad luck.
"He does not have it good. He receives severe punishment if there is even the slightest chance that his activity wasn't entirely obvious.
"He is only at this point, and it doesn't seem like much of his fault. He tries everything, and I get the impression that he is quite composed and concentrated. We'll continue to help him.
