Akufo-Addo inspects the Elmina Fishing Harbour, which is 91% complete.

As part of his two-day working visit to the Central Region, President Akufo-Addo inspected ongoing work on the Elmina Fishing Harbour.

The 30-month project began on August 1, 2020, with President Akufo-Addo cutting the sod.

During a tour of the facility on Saturday, September 3, 2022, the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, informed President Akufo-Addo that the project is now 91% complete, following the completion of the south and north breakwaters, sheet piling, dredging, scour and ploughing, and reclamation works.

The Minister stated that civil infrastructure works such as buildings, pavement, roads, and stormwater construction are currently underway and will be completed on time.

"The ongoing construction of the breakwaters, quay walls, civil buildings, as well as the dredging and reclamation works of the new port basin, will ensure the long-term development of this strategic port," he said.

The Elmina Fishing Port Rehabilitation and Expansion Project aims to build adequate facilities, berthing space, and a deep marine access to ensure the Elmina harbour's long-term viability.

Furthermore, the Project will strengthen Elmina's position in the fishing and salt industries, as well as place the city at the heart of the Akufo-Addo Government's cultural ambitions, making Elmina one of Ghana's most dynamic coastal cities.

Overall, the Project will begin by upgrading existing facilities such as the administration building, slipways, workshop, and port maintenance dredging.

Second, the Project will include the construction of a new fishing harbour, complete with a main breakwater and quay wall to allow larger fishing vessels to safely moor and offload, as well as a dedicated access road to the Port and a warehouse for storage.

An additional administrative building, a shed for the fish market, a shed for fishing net mending, two (2) Cold Stores/Ice factories, a new slipway for larger vessels with a boat refurbishment area, a toilet block, and a day care center are also being built.

To boost tourism, the Project will also provide beach and coastal protection works, as well as restoration of the area in front of the Elmina Castle.
