'It is long overdue for Christians to have a national monument,' says Palmer-Buckle.

Most Reverend Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana, has praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his vision to build a Cathedral for the nation.

The Archbishop of the Cape Coast Archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Ghana stated in a GBC interview monitored by GhanaWeb that it is long past time for Christians in the country to have a place to worship God together.

He also thanked the president for appointing him to the Cathedral's board of trustees.

"I want to thank the president of the republic for appointing me to the board of trustees; it was a surprise, but not a surprise, and I also want to thank him (the president) and my fellow trustee members for what we made of the president's simple vision that he shared with us.

"Because he (the president) envisioned a place where Christians and the nation could come together to thank the Lord for the many blessings. And he has entrusted it to us, which is why we are trustees. We have spent a lot of time thinking about what the National Cathedral should mean physically, biblically, spiritually, and even financially and economically.

"I was called to duty," he said of the Cathedral project. "As a Catholic Archbishop, I believe that it is long overdue for Christians in this country to have a national monument that we are united in the Lord Jesus Christ."

Meanwhile, the project's Executive Director, Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, confirmed on Tuesday, August 30, that the National Cathedral Project had been halted due to a lack of funds.

The National Cathedral project has been fraught with controversy, including funding issues.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has tagged the project as his personal pledge to God and his government, has been accused of channelling state funds into the project despite indicating that the private sector will fund the project.
