Free SHS should be looked into - Boakye Agyarko.
Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has joined calls for a review of the Free SHS policy.
He believes that parents should be allowed to bear some of the cost of their children's education, particularly uniforms and books, while the government bears the cost of tuition, which is more expensive.
In an interview with Okay FM, he stated,
"We could argue that parents should bear some of the cost, as should the government." We could have included final-year students in the free SHS program.
"I believe that costs should be shared. We can't rely on the government to do everything. We must consider the cost so that parents understand how much it costs to raise a child. Government should not pay for everything. Tuition is the most expensive component, but things like books and uniforms should be covered by the parents," he says.
The introduction of the Free SHS was one of the NPP's flagship programs that sparked much debate.
President Akufo-Addo launched free SHS, one of the NPP's main political promises, in September 2017.
Following implementation, there have been calls for the policy to be reviewed, as many believe that the flagship program has stretched the economy, despite the government allocating approximately GH7.5 billion to the program each year.

According to GhanaWeb, one person has been confirmed dead and three others are fighting for their lives at the Sandema Government Hospital after colliding with their respective motorbikes.
The incident occurred between 7 and 8 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2022, on the Yizesi-Nangrumah stretch of road in the Mamprugu Moaduri District of the North East Region.
The deceased, identified as Yakubu Sulley, 21, was confirmed dead by health workers at the Yizesi health centre in the Mamprugu Moaduri District of the North East Region after colliding with one Saibu Kadri, 22, who was riding a motorcycle with two young girls from Yizesi to Nangrumah to allegedly prospect for gold.
Saibu Kadri and the two young girls all had fractured left legs with varying degrees of injury.
According to locals, the victims had to wait for several hours before an ambulance could transport them from Fumbisi in the Upper East Region to Yizesi to Sandema due to the broken-down nature of the Yagaba-Kubori constituency ambulance, as a senior brother of Kadri, Sombelungu Hamza, attested.
"Because our District ambulance was out of commission, we had to request an ambulance from the Upper East Region." We informed them that we had an accident case in Yizesi and that they should come and assist us as soon as possible. They agreed, but they said we were going to pay Ghc400, but when they saw the two victims, they demanded Ghc500 instead of the agreed Ghc400, but what could we do?" He bemoaned.
The third victim, on the other hand, was transported to the Sandema hospital by a pick-up truck. The three victims are being treated at the Sandema Government Hospital in the Upper East Region.
