Re-registering all SIM cards before September 30 is impossible, according to the NIA's director.

Prof. Kenneth Agyeman Attafuah, Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), has stated that his organization will be unable to issue Ghana Cards to all those who require them in order to register their SIM cards by the deadline.

This means that not all of Ghana's nearly 2 million phone users with the Ghana Card will be able to register their SIM cards before the September 30, 2022 deadline.

According to Prof. Attafuah, the NIA does not currently have the capacity to print Ghana Cards for Ghanaians who require them to register their SIM Cards, citinesroom.com reports.

"The NIA will not be able to register those people." It is technically impossible to do so. We said it was impossible way back in March. It's like expecting a maiden to have a baby every three months, I've said.

"The physical and logistical systems were not designed to respond in that manner." "We can't do it," he said.

The NIA chief went on to say that the National Communications Authority (NCA) was well aware of his organization's limitations.

"It is not for the NIA to provide advice on that because it is outside the scope of its mandate." "However, I have it on good authority that we have been actively engaged with the National Communications Authority and the Minister [of Communications and Digitalisation] since last year," he said.

On September 5, 2022, the NCA announced that individuals who have not registered their SIM cards would be denied access to certain services, including all outgoing voice calls and data services.

The NCA explained in a statement that the move is part of a series of punitive actions leading up to the SIM re-registration deadline on September 30, 2022.

The NCA, on the other hand, reiterated that those who do not register their SIM cards by September 30 will have their numbers permanently blocked.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communication, stated that as of July 28, 2022, there were 42,121, 921 SIM cards with 25,260,661 voice SIMs completing stage one of the registration process, accounting for 60% of total registration.

According to the Minister, stage one had 16,861,260 unregistered SIM cards, accounting for 40% of the total, while stage two had 16,590,350 SIMs, accounting for 38% of the total.
