Chinese nationals have assumed control of the Ghana card, also known as the Non-Citizen National Identity Card.
China tops the list with 34,712 cards out of the 161,007 foreign nationals from 202 countries in Ghana that have received the Non-Citizen card.
According to data made accessible to DGN Online, Chinese nationals make up 22% of the foreigners who have received non-citizen Ghanacards.
According to information provided at a press conference in Accra by Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, Executive Secretary, National Identification Authority (NIA), Nigerians made up the second-largest group of people holding non-citizen Ghanacards, with a total of 25,873 cards.
He stated that 20,110 Indians, who are currently in third place, have gotten non-citizen Ghanacards.
He claims that Germans have the most cardholders (4,329), followed by Lebanese (4,324), British (4,133), South Africans (3,194), Ivorians (2,222), and Gabonese (1,958).
Prof Attafuah provided information on the number of persons who have registered with the Authority and indicated that as of September 15, 2022, about 17.1 million (17,163,081) people had been enrolled in the NIA system.
However, he claimed that a total of 15.8 million (15,869,026) cards were issued out of the entire number of cards printed so far, and 16.6 million (16,627,326) cards were printed out of the total number of enrolled participants.
The head of the NIA claimed that his organization had put in place a reliable mechanism to check all cards used by Ghanaians to conduct banking transactions and to check non-citizens who would use the card to open or renew a bank account, apply for a residence permit, or both.
Prof. Attafuah stated that Ghana is adamant about making the Ghana card "the sole source of proof," saying that the Authority implemented a verification system in January 2021 that required banks to confirm the identity of cardholders for a variety of transactions.
The bank can use your fingerprint to authenticate your identity as part of KYC (Know Your Customer) and provide you with a service if you visit the bank with or without your Ghana card, according to the Executive Secretary.
According to Prof. Attafuah, NIA will start registering Ghanaians living abroad in November 2022 and launch a campaign to register youngsters in the nation between the ages of four and 15 in December 2022.
The NIA will begin registering refugees next week, in the meantime.
