Akrofuom MP and DCE work together to eliminate the shift system at Akrofuom D/A School.

Teachers and students at Akrofoum D/A School in the Ashanti Region's Akrofuom District have breathed a sigh of relief after the Member of Parliament for the area, Alex Blankson, joined the District Chief Executive, Maurice Jonas Woode, to commission a three-classroom block at the school to end the shift system.

According to the District Chief Executive, the school had to admit more students after a private school in the area closed during the outbreak of COVID-19.

Due to the school's large enrollment, it was forced to implement a shift system, much to the chagrin of both students and teachers.

As a result, in an emergency move, the Assembly had to step in and construct a three-unit classroom block with a head teacher's office, a staff common room, and furniture for both teachers and students.

Mr Woode added that the structure, which will be added to the existing classroom block to accommodate 800 students, was built with GHS240,000 from Stool Lands revenue.

Mr Woode was quick to point out that the Assembly has planned additional classroom blocks as well as fencing around the school to deter encroachers.

He encouraged parents to be involved in their children's education, saying, "We all know the government's efforts in investing in education to relieve the financial burden on parents, but parents must also do their best by showing interest in their children's academic performance and general wellbeing in school."

Dr. Leandro Medina has been appointed as Ghana's new country representative by the International Monetary Fund.

According to Joy Business, Mr Medina replaces Dr. Touna Mama, who completed his 'Duty Tour' last week after serving in the position since 2018.

Dr. Medina previously worked at the IMF as a senior economist in the Strategy, Policy, and Review Department and the Macro Policy Division.

He has also worked in various IMF departments in the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Fund's African Department, particularly in Mozambique and Ghana.

Dr. Leandro Medina previously worked as an international consultant at the Inter-American Development Bank, where he participated in Portfolio Review and Policy Dialogue missions to Argentina and Uruguay.

Dr. Medina takes over at a time when Ghana is seeking US$3 billion from the fund to help stabilize the economy, which has been impacted by both internal and external factors such as the cedi's depreciation, revenue generation constraints, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and others.

On July 1, 2022, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo directed Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to present an economic rescue plan to the IMF in light of the country's current economic conditions.

Following that, a Fund team led by Carlo Sdralevich visited Ghana from July 6 to 13, meeting with relevant stakeholders.

Meanwhile, Kristalina Georgiva, Managing Director of the IMF, recently stated that her organization is determined to reach an agreement with the Government of Ghana by the end of this year.

She added that constructive discussions have already taken place with Ghanaian authorities about a possible economic assistance program.
