Glen Johnson believes Darwin Nunez will succeed at Liverpool, but the former Reds defender has alerted Jurgen Klopp that the Uruguayan striker could still be a top-flight flop like Timo Werner.
Nunez was Liverpool's marquee summer signing in the aftermath of Sadio Mane's departure to Bayern Munich. Following Mane's departure, the Reds put together a club-record £85 million package to entice Nunez ahead from Benfica. The 23-year-old had a dream start to his Liverpool career, scoring in consecutive games against Manchester City in the Community Shield and Fulham in the Premier League. But Nunez's early momentum came to an end when he was sent off in Liverpool's second league for headbutting Crystal Palace defender Joachim Anderson.

Nunez has not scored a goal in three appearances for the Reds after serving a three-match ban. Mohamed Salah has also struggled in the early stages of the season. Nunez, who scored 34 goals in 41 games for Benfica last season, would not be the first striker to face challenges in the Premier League after impressing elsewhere; Werner arrived in the top flight as one of Europe's most clinical strikers after an influential spell with RB Leipzig.
Werner ultimately did struggle to copy those heights in English football and was sold back to Leipzig this summer, but Johnson believes Nunez will fare better. "I'm confident Nunez will come good," he told Genting Casino. You want a player who has fire in their belly. In that regard, he resembles Richarlison. We'll have to wait and see if he can match Diaz's success, but I believe he has the potential.
Klopp previously stated his stance, slamming those who criticized Nunez during preseason. Back in July, the Reds' manager said of Nunez, "It was good, it was really good." It is obvious that it will improve over time. We live in a world where everyone is judged on first impressions, which is not beneficial to anyone, but it happens all the time.
"We weren't even close to the fitness level of today in the first few games [of pre-season], and then when he came on, we passed each ball for him to chase, and after the third ball, he was completely killed, and then everybody judged his first touches and these kinds of things."
