The government has been urged to halt all mining operations in the nation until further notice by the Convention People's Party (CPP).
Nana Yaa Jantuah, the Party's general secretary, claims that it will enable the nation to put better policies in place to make mining advantageous for the populace.
She consequently urged President Akufo-Addo to fulfill his commitment to combat illegal mining and step down.
"The president should resign as he pledged to do at the beginning of the battle against illicit mining," the CPP leader continued. The NPP government has failed miserably in the fight against Galamsey.
During the Kwame Nkrumah birthday celebration at the party's headquarters in Asylum Down in Accra, Nana Yaa Gyantuah made this observation.
At the outset of the battle against galamsey, President Akufo Addo staked his political future on the government's resolve to put a stop to illegal mining.
Despite the government's implementation of numerous policies, illegal mining continues to degrade waterways and agricultural areas.
"Mining isn't assisting us. How much money does the nation make from lawful mining? We once owned about 55% of AGC [Ashanti Goldfields Company], but today we only own about 3%.
"And we believe the President has failed in his efforts to combat malaria. He was the one who declared himself willing to risk losing his presidency in the conflict. Therefore, it is time for him to step down so that someone else who is more qualified may take over, she said.
Separately, Mr. Alex Segbefia, the NDC's Director for External Affairs and the Chairman of the Board at JEA Mills Heritage, stated that "the divide and rule of the UP tradition have worked up to this point, and it is in our hands to change that."
"Unity does not include abandoning your party to attend our party. That is not what we are referring to; all we are talking about is cooperation, cooperation, meeting, sharing common goals, and working together. Therefore, let's all try to go down that path.
With our sacrifices, he said, "we must tackle the elephant in the room; it is called the multiple languages (financial concerns)" if we want to succeed.
