A UTAG strike is looming.
There are reports of increasing agitation among university teachers as a result of rising living costs and what some describe as deteriorating service conditions.
However, it is unclear whether the agitation is related to any potential breaches of pledges made following the nationwide strike by all 15 public universities in January of this year, which was called off after nearly two months.
According to a communique obtained by myxyzonline, a joint press conference to be addressed by UTAG leadership and all Labour Unions in Public Universities is scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, September 28th, 2022.
According to the notice, the event will take place at the University of Professional Studies in Accra.
'Conditions of Service of University Workers' is the title of the agenda.
The news comes as the government meets with IMF representatives to discuss budget cuts and economic restructuring.
Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo, General Secretary of the University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has, however, hinted at an impending strike.
In a write-up on social media he sarcastically spoke the minds of his peers as he commented on the booing of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Global Citizen Concert held at the Black Star Square in Accra.
"Regardless of how angry we are, we will speak out against this act of disrespect against the President and the PRESIDENCY, and we will even lead labor once more to go on strike very soon," Professor Gyampo wrote.
"Yes, we are hungry, but when we find food, we cannot eat with both hands." Even in difficult times, a few party appointees are enjoying themselves and asking the rest of us to continue tightening our belts."
It will be remembered that on January 10, this year, all 15 public universities went on strike for an indefinite period of time. That lasted until the first week of March 2022, when they reluctantly ended it.
