The University Teachers' Association of Ghana (UTAG) has threatened to withdraw its services if the government does not pay the agreed-upon book and research allowance.Union leaders have previously engaged the government on an amount they believe is appropriate for the research allowance.

Other three unions which have decided to join the strike are Ghana  Association of University Administrators(GAUA),Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana(TEWU-GH) and Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana.(SSA-UoG)

At a press conference in Accra, the President of UTAG, Professor Solomon Nunoo, urged the government to, among other things, pay the book and research allowance to assist lecturers in carrying out their duties effectively.

"The employer should keep in mind that we are starting a new academic year, so continuous payment delays are unacceptable." UTAG also accused the government of making "evasive excuses" during its investigation into the allowances.

"We know the language that easily sinks into their psyche, and if they do not heed their agreement with us, we will speak it in one week," Prof. Nunoo said.

"Regardless of how angry we are, we will speak out against this act of disrespect against the President and the PRESIDENCY, and the fact that we will even lead labor once more to go on strike very soon," Professor Gyampo wrote.

"Yes, we are hungry, but when we find food, we cannot eat with both hands." Even in difficult times, a few party appointees are enjoying themselves and asking the rest of us to continue tightening our belts. "

Meanwhile, UTAG declared a strike earlier this year, on January 10, over its members' working conditions. However, the Association called off the strike in March after reaching an agreement with the government on a road map to improve members' conditions. Nonetheless, Prof. Gyampo, General Secretary of the University Teachers' Association, University of Ghana branch, has indicated that the association may strike again.
