Barcelona still 'owe' four clubs money for five different signings over the years

Despite a £137 million spending spree this summer, the Catalan giants are still struggling financially.

Economic levers were used to sign and register players, while they sold a significant number of them to shift their massive wages.

According to Laia Tudel, Barcelona still owes money on a few large purchases made over the years.Philippe Coutinho was Barcelona's record signing in 2017, and the club is still owed €14 million by Liverpool, despite the fact that the Brazil international now plays for Aston Villa.

Coutinho was never happy at Barcelona and spent a season on loan at Bayern Munich. In that 8-2 Champions League win over his parent club two years ago, he scored twice.

Frenkie de Jong and Sergio Dest were both signed by Barcelona from Ajax within 18 months of each other.

De Jong signed a contract with Barcelona in January 2019 before departing in the summer.

Meanwhile, Dest became the first USMNT player to sign a contract with Barcelona to play in La Liga in October 2020.

Barcelona is said to owe de Jong's fee of €32 million and Dest's fee of €10 million. In the summer, De Jong was linked with a move to Manchester United, while Dest joined AC Milan on loan with the option to buy on deadline day.

Miralem Pjanic joined from Juventus in a deal that also included the transfer of Arthur Melo to Turin. Former manager Ronald Koeman never liked Pjanic and he spent last season on loan with Bestikas in Turkey.

When he returned, he played in pre-season for Barcelona before joining Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. To reduce the immediate financial cost, Barcelona included Arthur in a deal for Pjanic. Two years later, they still owe €36 million. Ferran Torres, who joined from Manchester City in January, is the final player on the list. Barcelona was on the verge of missing out on Champions League qualification, so they signed Torres to bolster their attack.

Since Raphinha's arrival, he's slipped down the pecking order, starting just two league games this season.

It is a significant portion of Torres' fee that must be paid, €52 million to be exact.
