Erling Haaland's advice from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer comes back to haunt him.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's guidance has come back to haunt his former club following Erling Haaland's sensational derby-day performance at the Etihad.
Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have inadvertently cost his former club a derby day defeat at the hands of Manchester City.
Erling Haaland scored another hat-trick for Pep Guardiola's side in their 6-3 win over Manchester United at the Etihad. His first came in the form of a bullet header, getting the better of his marker Christian Eriksen to muster enough power on the effort to go over the line despite Tyrell Malacia's attempted clearance.
While fans across the continent have grown accustomed to seeing Haaland score almost any type of goal, heading was undoubtedly his weak spot early in his career. That is, until Solskjaer stepped in and provided some expertise.
Before the derby, Haaland recalled how the United legend helped him improve his game. "I couldn't head the ball when I was at my hometown club, Bryne," the Norwegian admitted to Sky Sports.
"I wasn't afraid of it, but when you're new to something, you're unsure how to do it." When I joined Molde with Ole, he said, 'you can't head, we have to start doing this.' So I was getting crosses from him and [assistant coach] Mark Dempsey almost every day, and I was heading them in.
Mark was throwing the ball with ease, and he was in the goal from five metres away. I was exhausted from heading it straight, and we did it so many times. Nothing beats practicing something and seeing the results, thinking 'this is getting easier,' or finally scoring a goal with your head.
Haaland's goal-scoring exploits are bordering on the ridiculous, with the former Borussia Dortmund striker already having 14 league goals in just eight games.
His hat-trick against United was his third in a row at home, the first time that feat had been accomplished in Premier League history. Throughout Solskjaer's tenure at Old Trafford, there was widespread speculation that Haaland would reunite with him.
