Allow the IGP to lead the fight against galamsey - Prof. Charles Marfo to government.
Prof. Charles Marfo, Provost of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology's (KNUST) College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS), has echoed the clarion call for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to be entrusted with combating illegal mining in the country, according to Purefmonline.com.
In an interview with Kwame Adinkrah on Kumasi-based Pure FM, the former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) stated that the IGP has demonstrated competence through his high-class tactical abilities and has over the period exerted the qualities required to garner gains concerning the leadership responsibilities required to combat the galamsey menace.
According to him, the government's efforts to suppress galamsey activities have so far fallen short of reward and punishment modalities, which he describes as a critical component for fighting the crime.
He stated that the IGP has matured to the point where it has the potential to close loopholes and gaps in the galamsey fight processes.
"Kwame, the last time I heard you, you were recommending the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, as the man for the galamsey fight job." I agree with you.
Consider this: he was chastised for instituting a system in which competent relatives replace officers who die in the line of duty, but Kwame, what was the overall feedback and attitude of our officers after this system was implemented?
These are the types of rewards and punishments I'm referring to. What happens to my family if I commit myself to the nation and then leave?"
"We require a formidable system to accommodate the rewards, benefits, or emoluments of front liners (security personnel) dispatched to these illegal mining areas."
Such mechanisms will instill patriotism and unwavering commitment to the national course.
This, and many other things, I believe Dampare will bring on board if he is left to lead the charge in the galamsey fight."
"The illegal mining sector has a tendency to corrupt security officers assigned to combat galamsey." What do we expect these military officers to do if they are pushed into the forests and see these miners living lavishly?" He questioned.
The KNUST CoHSS Provost re-iterated his description of Dr. Dampare as a brilliant policymaker, citing his recently implemented rewarding systems in the Police Service, such as an emergency medical fund and the replacement of officers killed in the line of duty with a qualified family member into the Police force.
Such tactful packages, according to him, will eliminate diabolic thoughts questioning the essence of committing oneself to the success of a national need.
