Free SHS instruction is of high quality, according to the education minister.
According to Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education, the Free Senior High School (FSHS) education program's quality is good rather than terrible.
Dr. Adutwum stated that the FSHS program "did not arrive to lower the quality of the country's education" and expressed confidence that the government's effective interventions would guarantee the program's quality level and would always be at par with rising student enrollment.
He noted that some people claimed enrollment had increased with a corresponding decline in quality, but it was false and implausible because, in education policy, enrollment and quality could both increase.
The point was made by Dr. Adutwum in a speech read on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo at a durbar held at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region and organized by the board, management, and former students of the Dormaa Senior High School (DORMASS) to cap off the school's 75th anniversary celebration.
The event, which attracted a large crowd, had as its theme "Educating the Youth for Sustainable Development."
Dr. Adutwum listed a number of elements and strategies that could improve educational quality, including students arriving on time to class and receiving additional instruction time, giving students access to textbooks, and compensating teachers for interventions.
He lamented the small number of students studying science in the school and ordered the administration to take measures to increase the number. He also gave them the assurance that efforts would soon be made to supply the school with chemistry, physics, and biology laboratory equipment to improve effective teaching and learning of science.
Dr. Adutwum cited available figures that revealed a constant growth in the number of students who had been admitted to universities from 2016 to 2020 and praised the school as an excellent example of enhanced education quality under the FSHS education program.
He stated that in 2016, just before the FSHS was implemented, only 21.5% of students were eligible to enroll in universities. However, in 2017, after the implementation, that number rose to 50%, and it then increased to 55% in 2018, 78.2% in 2019, and 89.0% in 2020.
According to Dr. Adutwum, the government is committed to transforming the country, which is why new educational policies in teaching and learning have been introduced and promoted. These policies include approaches to critical thinking, STEM and TVET education, as well as a four-year teacher preparation program.
According to him, the goal of increasing the years of teacher education and training is to "improve and strengthen the development, competency, capacity, and skills of teachers so that they may have a beneficial impact on schoolchildren and accelerate the socioeconomic growth of the country."
Dr. Adutwum recommended the students to avoid being lazy and to concentrate more on their studies in order to ensure their success in achieving their own future academic and professional goals.
The Bono Regional Minister, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, stated earlier in a speech that the event needed to motivate students, faculty, and staff to work even more so that the institution might win additional honors.
She made a personal gift to the anniversary program in the sum of Gh10,000.
