Punish clergy members who engage in criminal activity - Ghana Charismatic Bishops Conference.
?Rev. Kwesi Deh, General Secretary of the Ghana Charismatic Bishops' Conference, has urged the state to punish clergy members who engage in criminal activities.
The statement follows the arrest of Patricia Oduro, alias Nana Agradaa, the founder of the Heaven Way International Church, who the Conference believes should be dealt with if found guilty of the crimes she is accused of.
Rev. Kwesi Deh stated that the Charismatic Bishops fully support the state prosecuting clergy members who commit crimes in the name of God.
He did, however, state that the state should not impose unnecessary regulations on faith-based organizations because of a few miscreants, according to citinewsroom.com.
It is possible for people in the name of religion to commit crime and fraud. Thank God Ghana is a very civilized society and there are laws governing all these crimes. Therefore, I think that the laws should deal with this issue.
"This country's churches are the most orderly. Yes, there are criminals. Furthermore, churches are not afraid of regulation; it is the type of regulation that is being discussed that we oppose. There are numerous registered churches. What we oppose are laws that define how things are done.
"If someone is involved in a money-doubling scheme, the issue of church regulation should not be raised." "In the first place, it is not a religious action," Rev Deh is quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, Patricia Oduro Koranteng, the founder and leader of Heaven Way Champion International Ministries, has been denied bail by an Accra Circuit Court.
On Sunday, October 9, 2022, Agradaa was arrested by police on suspicion of defrauding her church members in an alleged money-doubling scheme.
According to a 3news.com report obtained by GhanaWeb, the court denied her bail on Monday and rescheduled her case for Thursday, October 13, 2022.
On Sunday, October 9, 2022, the Ghana Police Service arrested Nana Agradaa, now known as Evangelist Mama Pat.
The Service announced this in a statement shared via its social media handles on Sunday, October 9, 2022.
"The police arrested Patricia Asiedua alias Nana Agradaa after some members of the public accused her of a money-doubling scam." The suspect is currently assisting police with their investigation, according to the statement.
Nana Agradaa's arrest follows allegations made by a number of her church members that she had scammed them after an all-night service.
In a viral video, the former fetish priestess advertised that she would distribute money to people who attended her all-night church service on Friday, October 7, 2022.
Things however did not go as planned for many of the people who attended the service as many of them cried foul that they had given out monies to her but she failed to keep to her side of the agreement.
