Roma Legend Daniele De Rossi Appointed as New SPAL Coach. Legendary Roma player Daniele De Rossi goes for the leadership position at SPAL in Italy.
After being named as Roberto Venturato's replacement, Daniele De Rossi will begin his career as a head coach with Serie B club SPAL. De Rossi previously played for Italy and Roma.
De Rossi, 39, from Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna, has agreed to join the club on a deal that will last through the end of June 2024.
De Rossi recently worked as Roberto Mancini's technical assistant for Italy, but he has since left the position to go it alone in Italy's second division.
With SPAL currently in 14th place in Serie A and having dropped their past two games, Venturato was fired on Sunday.
In his 18-year first-team career, De Rossi made 616 appearances for Roma in all competitions while serving as the team's captain in 207 contests. De Rossi has played in more games for the capital giants than only Francesco Totti.
Additionally, he amassed 117 caps for Italy national team, where he helped the nation win the World Cup in 2006 and continued to play until 2017.
After departing from Roma in 2019, he briefly played for Boca Juniors before turning to coaching and joining Mancini in the Azzurri setup.
When Italy defeated England on penalties in the Wembley final to win the postponed Euro 2020 competition last year, De Rossi was a member of Mancini's coaching team.
The FIGC, the Italian football federation, approved of his transfer to Serie B side SPAL, with president Gabriele Gravina wishing him well on his "new professional adventure.
"I applaud him for the commitment and passion with which he has always honored the blue shirt, dedicating himself and given us so much happiness, in the belief that the experience obtained in Club Italia would be very valuable to him."
