5 superstars who struggle missing the 2022 World Cup due to injury
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is now less than four weeks away. Every footballer's dream is to play for their country in the World Cup. Teams compete in the Qualifiers for a spot in football's showpiece event, and players give it their all.
Several top stars will not play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup because their respective national teams failed to qualify. High-profile players such as Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, Marco Verratti, David Alaba, and Luis Diaz will be absent from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
In addition, some unfortunate players may be forced to withdraw from the 2022 FIFA World Cup due to injury. Without further ado, here are five superstars who are in danger of missing the 2022 FIFA World Cup due to injury.
N'Golo Kante is ranked first.
N'Golo Kante, a Chelsea and France midfielder, has been out with a hamstring injury since August 14. The 31-year-old midfielder was instrumental in France's World Cup triumph. However, he has had to deal with niggling injury issues in recent years.
Kante was supposed to return to action this week, but he had a setback in training. According to Chelsea manager Graham Potter, the extent of his injury is unknown. He stated:
"We're just waiting on N'Golo, he had a reaction in training." So we're just waiting for word on that." It's not ideal, and it's disappointing for him and us, but we have to wait and see the extent of it before proceeding."
Paulo Dybala is ranked second.
Paulo Dybala has been in superb form for AS Roma this season. So far this season, he has seven goals and two assists in 11 appearances for AS Roma across all competitions.
Dybala suffered an injury in Roma's win over Lecce last weekend and was forced to leave the game. The Argentine midfielder had injured one of his quadricep muscles, according to scans. According to Sky Sports (via Fooball Italia), he will be out for four to six weeks.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup begins in about five weeks, and Dybala is racing against the clock to regain fitness.
Angel Di Maria (#3)
In the last decade, Angel Di Maria has been one of Argentina's most important players. The Juventus forward, however, is questionable for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after suffering a muscle strain in his right thigh.
He pulled up holding his right thigh while chasing a pass during Juventus' 2-0 loss to Maccabi Haifa. Di Maria immediately realized something was wrong and looked at the bench to indicate it.
According to Football Italia, the 34-year-old will go through a series of tests to determine the extent of his injury.
Reece James, #4
Gareth Southgate has a soft spot for his right-backs. He named four right-backs to England's Euro 2020 squad, including Kyle Walker, Reece James, Kieran Trippier, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Unfortunately for Southgate, he is worried about a couple of them's fitness ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Chelsea right-back Reece James suffered a knee injury in midweek's 2-0 win over AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League.
After the game, Chelsea manager Graham Potter chose to be optimistic about James' chances of recovering quickly from his injury. Potter stated: "We're hoping for the best for Reece. [We'll need] 24-48 hours because it's too soon to tell you anything else."
Paul Pogba is ranked fifth.
Paul Pogba suffered a meniscus injury during Juventus' preseason tour of the United States. He has yet to play a single minute for the Bianconeri since making a sensational return to the club this summer as a free agent.
Pogba could return before the World Cup, but his lack of match fitness could jeopardize his chances of playing in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Deschamps stated in an interview with Rai Sport (via Calciomercato):
"Paul's recovery program is going well, but it's difficult to give a specific date for his return as of today."
"I'll have to make a decision, but I can't say whether he'll be ready or not right now."
"The only requirement for Paul's summons is that he recover. However, the fact that he hasn't played in a while could be an issue. So I'm hoping he can play as much as he can for Juventus before the World Cup."
