Manchester United has 'activated' a one-year contract extension for the Barcelona target.
Manchester United will activate Diogo Dalot's one-year contract extension as they are wary of interest from La Liga heavyweights Barcelona, according to reports. Dalot has finally established himself as the first-choice right-back at Old Trafford after having to bide his time since joining the club in 2018. This season, the Portuguese international has been impressive for both club and country, and his performances have piqued the interest of Barcelona.
Despite signing Hector Bellerin last summer, the Blaugrana will be looking for another right-back in 2023. This is due to the fact that both Bellerin and Sergi Roberto's contracts will expire at the end of the season.
According to recent reports, Dalot has emerged as the Catalan heavyweights' top right-back target. The 23-year-old is said to fit the profile of manager Xavi Hernandez, and his contract situation makes him an appealing prospect.
Indeed, the former FC Porto starlet's current Manchester United contract is set to expire at the end of the current season. Barcelona is said to have made contact with Bosman's entourage about a possible move next year.
To avoid this possibility, the Red Devils will now exercise his one-year unilateral contract extension option, securing his future until at least 2024.
It would mean that Barcelona would be unable to sign Dalot on a free transfer next year, though they could still try to sign him for a reasonable fee given that he will only have a year left on his contract.
Manchester United may need to pay €25 million to sell the Portuguese international, according to reports. It remains to be seen whether Barcelona is willing to pay that much for the 23-year-old or look elsewhere.
For the time being, Manchester United will extend his contract for another year.
