Jurgen Klopp blasts Man City, Newcastle United, and Paris Saint-Germain for making football uncompetitive.
Manchester City, Newcastle, and Paris Saint-Germain can spend more than anyone else and, according to Liverpool manager Jugen Klopp, have created an imbalance.
Jurgen Klopp has bluntly criticized the influence of oil money in football, claiming that "no one can compete" with Manchester City's wealth.
The Liverpool manager is tasked with doing just that on Sunday, when a Liverpool team that has been the closest to the UAE-owned club in the last five years must find a way to stop City and their star striker Erling Haaland. When asked how he will do it, Klopp insisted that people would not appreciate his answer...because he believes it is an unfair competition.
"You will not like the answer, and you already know the answer." Nobody can compete with City," he said, for the first time explicitly criticizing football's imbalance. You take the best team in the world and bring in the best striker on the market, regardless of the cost. I know City will not like it, nor will anyone else. You posed the question, but you already know the answer."
Klopp asserted that three clubs - City, Qatari-owned PSG, and Newcastle, which is owned by Saudi Arabia's public investment fund - have the backing of a nation's wealth, allowing them to "do whatever they want."
He understands that the rules of the game relating to governance and fair play can do little to curb the spending power of such powerful, oil-rich countries and reduce City's current dominance, implying that his club has little to respond.
"What does Liverpool do?" he continued. We can't behave like them. It is simply not possible. It is not possible. It's simple, and you already know the answer. There are three clubs in the world that can do whatever they want financially. It's legal and all, but they can do whatever they want. They'll say, "Yeah, but we have..." but that's exactly the case.
"I just heard that someone at Newcastle (sporting director Dan Ashworth) said, "There is no ceiling for this club." Yes! He is correct. He is completely correct. Newcastle's potential is limitless. Congratulations, but there are limits in other clubs."
Klopp has injury concerns ahead of City's visit, admitting that he must wait until Saturday to see who is fit to face the champions.
