The 10 most expensive sales in Liverpool history and how they fared after departing
Few Liverpool players want to leave Anfield now that they are among the finest teams in the world under Jurgen Klopp.
However, Liverpool has occasionally agreed to sell a player in a high-profile deal throughout the Premier League era.
In order to assess how well they performed after leaving Anfield, we examined Liverpool's ten most costly outgoings as reported by Transfermarkt.
Dominic Solanke 10.
Even though Solanke only managed one goal in 27 games for Liverpool, he still managed to persuade Bournemouth that he was worth £19 million in January 2019.
The striker's three Premier League goals in 2019–20 were unable to stop their relegation to the Championship as he continued to struggle in front of goal.
He did, however, settle in the second tier, scoring 45 goals to help the Dorset club win promotion at the second attempt. This season, he has already scored in the Premier League.
Danny Ings 9.
Ings, a highly regarded striker, signed with Liverpool in the summer of 2015, although he struggled with injuries and played only 25 times for the Reds.
The England international joined the club on a permanent basis for a cost of £20 million following a fruitful loan season at Southampton in 2018–19.
Before finalizing a £25 million transfer to Aston Villa in 2021, he scored 38 goals in 75 appearances in all competitions over the ensuing two seasons.
Under Steven Gerrard's direction, it hasn't quite occurred for Ings or any other Villa attacker, but he is unquestionably a reliable Premier League performer.
8. Mamadou Sakho Sakho
played for Liverpool for four seasons before a series of infractions led to a £26 million transfer to Crystal Palace in 2017.
Although the center-back was well-liked at Selhurst Park, injury issues prevented him from starting more than 59 Premier League games during his four seasons there.
After being cut go at the conclusion of the 2020–21 campaign, he went back to his native France and signed a deal
with Montpellier of Ligue 1.
Christian Benteke, no. 7
Benteke, who cost £32.5 million to sign in 2015, played for Liverpool for just one season before being transferred to Crystal Palace at a loss of £5.5 million.
The international player from Belgium made an impression right away, scoring 17 goals in all competitions in his first campaign, including a brace in a 2-1 victory at Anfield.
Although Palace supporters admired his work ethic, Benteke was never particularly productive at Selhurst Park and left for MLS team DC United in the summer.
Sadio Mane, no. 6
Let's not prod an open wound since Mane's passing is still hard for Liverpool fans to accept.
When he joined Bayern Munich in 2014, he then added to his already-full trophy cabinet by winning three straight Bundesliga championships before hanging up his boots in 2017.
Raheem Sterling, 4.
As a 15-year-old, Sterling moved to Liverpool from QPR for an initial fee of £450,000. He progressed through the academy and, in 2013–14, teamed up with Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez to form a lethal attacking trio.
But he infuriated Liverpool supporters in 2015 by declining to sign a new deal, and he later completed a contentious £49 million move to Manchester City.
The 27-year-old has since improved under Pep Guardiola, becoming one of the best wingers in the world. Before joining Chelsea this summer, he won three Premier League championships with Manchester City, four League Cups, and an FA Cup.
Sterling, who shone for England at Euro 2020, will be looking to continue this form in the World Cup this year.
Fernando Torres 3.
Torres scored 81 goals in 142 appearances while at Anfield, reaching the pinnacle of his game, before moving to Chelsea in January 2011 for £50 million.
The striker struggled to maintain that level of play at Stamford Bridge, but his historic goal against Barcelona in the Champions League final helped Chelsea win the trophy for the first time in their history.
After returning for three seasons to Atletico Madrid, where he first played, he finished his career in Japan with Sagan Tosu in 2019.
Luis Suarez 2.
Arsenal made a £40 million offer for Suarez in 2013, but he finally chose to stay at Liverpool and nearly led them to the Premier League title by scoring 31 goals in 33 appearances.
The Uruguayan international then pushed for a transfer to Barcelona, and Liverpool grudgingly accepted a £75 million bid—despite not using that money very wisely.
Despite serving a suspension from a biting incident at the World Cup that prevented him from starting the 2014–15 season, he helped Barcelona win the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Champions League as part of the team.
The striker kept up his impressive play, and after 283 games across all competitions and 198 goals, he was named the third-highest goalscorer in club history.
Suarez transferred to Atletico Madrid in 2020 after being dropped by Ronald Koeman, where he won a fifth La Liga championship in his first campaign. Now he is back in Uruguay playing for Nacional.
Philippe Coutinho is one
In January 2018, as they looked for a long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta, Barcelona went back to the Liverpool store after their success with Mascherano and Suarez.
The world's best midfielder, Coutinho, was acquired by the Spanish powerhouses for a club record £142 million. Under Klopp, he had become one of the best in the world.
But the Brazilian international didn't live up to his high price tag, and Barcelona even jeered him.
He still holds two La Liga championship medals, and in 2019–20, he also won the triple crown while on loan at Bayern Munich.
When Coutinho returned to the Premier League in January 2022, he initially signed a loan agreement with Aston Villa before making the switch to a permanent one this summer. But regrettably, in the West Midlands, he appeared to be a mere shell of his former self.
