Frenkie de Jong admits he was aware he would see less playing time this season at Barcelona.
After a summer of speculation about his future, Frenkie de Jong has admitted he knew he would have less playing time at Barcelona this season.
The midfielder was heavily linked with a move away from Barcelona, but he made it clear whenever asked that he did not want to leave and was perfectly content at the club.
De Jong did stay, but he appears to have lost his starting spot, with Pedri, Sergio Busquets, and Gavi the preferred three at the moment.
The Dutchman admitted that he knew that would be the case, but he is hopeful that he can force his way back into contention and is eager to get El Clasico underway.
I knew I'd be getting less playing time. "I have to start from scratch," he explained.
"I didn't play against Bayern, and I'd like to play against Real Madrid." Physically, I am in good shape. "I'll have to put in a lot of effort to get started at the Bernabeu." "Perhaps [Xavi] has already decided [his team], but we usually don't know until the day of the game." Of course, we are disappointed after the game against Inter, but we must change our mindset. Rejoice and concentrate on the Clasico.
"We need to demonstrate that we are still a good team."
De Jong also discussed his situation at the club over the summer, saying he remained calm in the face of intense pressure.
"I was cool. In May, I made the decision to stay. "I never changed my mind, even though I knew the pressure would come," he added.
"From the newspapers, from the president, from everyone, actually." I desired to remain at Barça. Nothing got me off track."
Ziggo Sport is the source.
De Jong has only started three La Liga games this season, and it's unclear whether he'll start against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
