Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso are candidates to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

The German manager has led the Reds to the pinnacle of club football, winning the Premier League and the Champions League, but results have been lacking this season, and they face a difficult test on Sunday against Manchester City.

Liverpool is currently 11th in the table, with only two wins from their first eight games.

A ray of hope emerged with their 7-1 Champions League win over Rangers in midweek, but the true measure of where the club stands will be found when they face rivals City.Klopp recently signed a new long-term contract, but Murphy believes that when his contract expires, some of his former teammates could take over.

Who do you think will succeed Klopp as manager of Liverpool? Tell us in the comments section below.

"I think Steven Gerrard or Xabi Alonso could manage Liverpool, absolutely, yeah," he told Fair Betting Sites. I don't think either of them has done nearly enough to merit that.

"I don't think there's a single Liverpool fan on the planet, regardless of the start of the season, who is even considering a change with Klopp." That does not occur to me."I think Stevie has a big couple of seasons at Villa to prove his credentials and implement his style." It's been a roller coaster ride for him at Villa. We'll have to wait and see because he'd be the first to say it.

"I believe Alonso is still in the early stages of his managerial career." So, you know, that's a difficult one to predict. I know he had a good first win, but given their popularity among Liverpool fans and the legacy they've left, it would be foolish not to believe that one of them could one day be in the dugout at Anfield."Alonso was appointed manager of Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month and could not have started any better, defeating Schalke 4-0.

Gerrard led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership in a record-breaking season, but his form at Aston Villa has been a little lackluster, with some tipping him to be fired.

Murphy, a TalkSport pundit, played for the Reds from 1997 to 2004, appearing 246 times and scoring 44 goals across all competitions.
