Faceless by Amma Darko na tragic story of street children inside Accra, Ghana and di main theme of di story dey all about poverty and violence wey fit drive children to streets and women to prostitution.

Di story begin with Fofo, one 14 -year-old girl wey dey sleep on top one old cardboard for Agbogbloshie market and her job na to wash carrot for di vegetable market inside di market.

Oda things wey Fofo dey do inside di slum wey dey poplar as Sodom and Gomorrah and dey close to di market, na watching adult movies or taking alcohol. Just like di wishes of every street children, Fofo dey always dream of living inside comfortable apartment wey get roof and toilet.


One day, one street lord wey dem call Poison nearly rape Fofo, she struggle with Poison and later run go di house of her best friend, Odarley.

She tell Odarley about Poison attempt to rape her and her plan to see her mama wey she believe say get some connections with Poison.

Fofo mama, Maa Tsuru later come inform her say her elder sister, Baby T don die and Poison don threaten her to keep quiet about Baby T death, then advise Fofo to leave for her safety.

Di death of Fofo sister, Baby T really pain her well-well. Dem kill Baby T afta enough beating and dump her naked body for market square.

Dis tragic loss lead Fofo into di pursuit of justice and vengeance for di death of Baby T. Fofo later come in contact with group of women wey dey run one documentation NGO wey dem call MUTE.

Afta MUTE and Sylv Po come into di issue, dem come uncover one epidemic and information about di fate of thousands of street children come dey open for public.

Dem come identify di perpetrators (guilty pipo) and discover di source of streetism ( dat na children wey dey live and work on di streets because of bad condition).

Fofo come get second chance to live better life and her dream later come true.


Themes of Faceless

  • Discrimination Against Women

Di women for di novel bear di hardship from male characters wey be mostly absent fathers, murderers and rapists.

Take for instance, Kwei, Maa Tsuru lover and di father of her first four children wey abandon her because of di superstitious belief wey say she dey cursed.

Poison di street lord attack Baby T and even try to rape Fofo. Kpakpo and Onko take advantage of Baby T and defile her. In fact, Kpapkpo na im plan Baby T waka into prostitution.

  • Streetism

Another important theme na streetism wey dey represented by di life inside Sodom and Gomorrah, one slum inside Accra.

Faceless show di bad-bad tins wey dey happun for street life and di oda issues like, rape, violence, broken home, theft, dirt, poverty, AIDS and illiteracy.


  • Parental Neglect:

Di theme of parental neglect dey all through di novel. Di parent abandon all di pikin wey dey for street. Fofo, Baby T, Odarley, even Poison na all victims of pipo wey parent neglect.
