Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reacts to Barcelona, Juventus and others dropping into Europa League

After the likes of Barcelona and Juventus dropped out of the Champions League, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes this season's Europa League knockout stages will be at a level "never seen before."

The Gunners' 2-0 defeat to PSV in Eindhoven on Thursday evening means they have yet to secure top spot in their group and could face a play-off tie against a Champions League drop-out in February.

Barcelona, Ajax, and Atletico Madrid were all eliminated from Europe's top club competition on Wednesday night, while Juventus was eliminated the day before after losing to Benfica.Depending on what happens in the final round of matches, RB Salzburg, AC Milan, and Sevilla could also join Arsenal in the Europa League, and Arteta knows his side will almost certainly need to overcome a slew of very accomplished teams to win the trophy.

Arteta told BT Sport: 'Yeah, we knew that.'

'Obviously, we knew the results and what was coming, and the competition will most likely be at a level never seen before.' This is the test for us.'Arsenal's final group match against FC Zurich would have been effectively a dead rubber if they had earned a point against PSV, but only a win will ensure their progression as group winners now.

When asked if this will affect his approach to the match, which takes place a few days before they visit Stamford Bridge, Arteta responded, 'We never planned to have a day off in that fixture because we know how difficult it is to win in Europe.'
