I knew I had to leave Chelsea for a new challenge - Callum Hudson-Odoi

After making 11 appearances under former manager Thomas Tuchel, the 21-year-old became surplus to requirements.

Hudson-Odoi is on loan from Chelsea to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Hudson-Odoi has already started eight Bundesliga and Champions League games for Leverkusen, primarily as a left-sided attacker.

"Are you not a natural-born wing-back?" Hudson-Odoi reflected on a meeting with Tuchel, who has since been replaced by Graham Potter.

"Certainly not! It was okay at times. But sometimes I wonder, 'What am I doing, why am I in this position?' I'm more of a defender than an attacker.

"I was always trying to do my best and help the team, no matter where I was playing - it's not always about me.

Hudson-Odoi explained in an interview with The Athletic that his comments were not intended to be a criticism of Tuchel, but rather a frustration with his previous two seasons at Chelsea.

"With so many great players on the team, you have to fight for your position and put in your best effort," he explained. "It was difficult, but you had to push through and do what you could.

"'I have to get out of there,' I thought. Not in a condescending manner, as in "I don't like the club" or "I don't want to be at the club," but simply "I don't like the club." That is not the case."But I needed to find a new place to play football. Begin again. I will do my best wherever I am. Then return to Chelsea at the end of the loan."

Hudson-Odoi has yet to score in his ten appearances for Leverkusen, though he has assisted one goal. Only Moussa Diaby (21) has created more chances than Hudson-Odoi (15).

After a poor start to the season that saw Gerardo Seoane replaced by Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen are just one point above the Bundesliga relegation zone.

Regardless of their poor form, Hudson-Odoi is relieved to be playing more regularly in Germany's top flight.

"The results haven't been great, but I think the experience has been very good," he said."I'm having fun with football and smiling every day. And the boys have aided me in quickly settling in. I'm at ease here."

On Wednesday night, the promising forward scored as they shared the points with Athletico Madrid in the Champions League.
