If it hadn't been for COVID - Ayew Afriye - Ofori-Atta would have been one of Africa's most celebrated ministers.
Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore and one of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs calling for the dismissal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has stated that if not for the Coronavirus and the Russia-Ukraine war, the minister would have been one of the most glorified ministers in the sub-region.
According to the MP who is the Chairman of Parliament's Health Committee, Ken Ofori-Atta has performed admirably, insisting that the economy's growth and direction were on the right track prior to the global disasters.
He did, however, say that despite the finance minister's excellent work on the economy, Ghanaians are facing difficult times, which is why there is a push for his dismissal.
Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye also compared Ghanaians to the Israelites of biblical times, who rejected God whenever they faced adversity.
He also stated that, while the MPs recognize Ken Ofori-outstanding Atta's performance, they are only acting on the instructions of their constituents.
"We represent the people, and we must respond to their request." But for COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine War, I am confident Ken would have been one of Africa's most lauded ministers because the economy's growth and direction were on the right track.
"It's difficult to work with people because when things are going well, they don't complain, but when things get difficult, they forget all the good things you've done for them." It's similar to how ungrateful the Israelites were to God despite everything God did for them. In difficult times, they rejected God and even worshiped idols.
“So, the only way to satisfy our constituents is to act upon their demand of getting Ken Ofori-Atta sacked. They won’t listen to anything you tell them,” he told the Morning show host of Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV, Kwesi Parker-Wilson, in an interview.
He also added that if there are signs of economic recovery, they (the MPs) will abandon the call for the dismissal of the finance minister.
“Yes, we acceded to the president’s appeal so if after the 3 weeks, the economy is doing well, and everyone is talking about it we won’t push through with demand for his dismissal,” he added.
