Sulley Muntari, a former midfielder for the Black Stars, has admitted that after leaving Hearts of Oak, he spoke to a board member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko about joining the Porcupine Warriors.

On February 1st, 2022, Sulley Muntari signed a contract with Hearts of Oak for an undisclosed sum till the end of the current campaign.

On March 4, 2022, the Phobians and the former AC Milan midfielder won the President's Cup. In order to win the title, Hearts of Oak defeated Asante Kotoko 2-1.

The Phobians and Sulley Muntari met after the 2021/22 season ended to explore a new contract, but their disagreements forced them to part ways.

"I had a couple of conversations with them and several of the board members about my desire to travel to Africa and assist those in need. When my contract with Hearts of Oak expired, I was still working with them and discussing how to assemble a very capable team. When you are going to play any CAF competition, whether it is in Africa or Europe or something else, you prepare for it with the players you used to qualify for the other stage of the Champions League, and I didn't want to go embarrass myself at the African campaign, he said on Dan Kweku Yeboah TV on YouTube.

"You need to add quality players to the roster, therefore I was talking to Hearts about putting together a team, but of course the management had other plans. Don't push someone if they have a different notion even though you've told them to do something.

"To be quite honest, I didn't want to attend and embarrass myself because I know how hard I've worked to improve my football game. I was speaking with Kotoko, and it was the same: Hearts didn't do what I wanted, so I wanted to go to Kotoko, but I wouldn't come and wreck everything with this tiny thing.

"The mindset I want to employ to create a good team applies even if it is a little team in the second division because once you have a strong team, you can sell players two or three times the following year to raise money and create the squad once more. Consequently, the most of the teams we play in Europe do that, and I wanted to see something similar here, but the mindset is just different, and we keep saying stuff like "mentality is different" and "mentality is different and all these things it is dreadful,""
