Xavi prefers to sign a new right-back over a defensive midfielder.
Barcelona is set to enter the transfer market again in January as they look to further strengthen their squad despite spending heavily during the summer.
According to reports, the Blaugrana have identified two positions that need to be strengthened as soon as possible. In the winter, the club hopes to sign a new right-back and a defensive midfielder.
According to Javi Miguel of Diario AS, manager Xavi Hernandez is currently prioritizing the signing of a new right-back over a pivot midfielder.
Xavi currently has Hector Bellerin and Sergi Roberto as his primary options at right back. However, neither is regarded as a quality option, forcing Xavi to rely on Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, and even Alejandro Balde as a right-sided full-back.
Bellerin was only signed this summer, but he was never Xavi's or Barcelona's first choice. The Catalans attempted to sign Cesar Azpilicueta, Juan Foyth, and Thomas Meunier before settling on the former Arsenal ace as a less expensive option.
However, the Spaniard has not performed well in his previous matches. While Roberto has looked good in bursts, his injury issues remain a concern.
Given the circumstances, Xavi would prefer to sign a new right-back before focusing on a new pivot midfielder.
Diogo Dalot of Manchester United is still a target for Barcelona, and despite the fact that his contract expires next year and the Red Devils are expected to trigger a 12-month extension, his signing is seen as complicated.
So it remains to be seen who Barcelona will pursue in the January transfer window. However, Xavi's priority right now is to bring in a new right-back before focusing on a midfielder to cover for and compete with Sergio Busquets who is almost set to leave fc Barcelona for the MLS with frienkie de young as a potential replacement
