Cities undergo metamorphosis with time. Since there have always been cities, this change has always been a fact. The majority of the ancient cities that date back to the initial settlements in human history are no longer standing. Most of them are now archaeological sites or ruins, and occasionally their exact location becomes unknown. 


On the other hand, some historic cities that are thousands of years old and are still going strong still exist. The inhabitants of these towns, which were established many thousands of years ago, are still present today. Even currently, people still reside in those cities. Interested in having a feel of as much prehistoric history as possible without having to travel to an uninhabited archaeological site?

The oldest city currently in the world that is still inhabited is Jericho. Around 9,600 BC, the initial permanent settlement was established within the  limits of the city. The oldest walled city in the world is situated in Jericho. The famed Wall of Jericho, which dates as far back to 8,000 BC, is the oldest city wall ever discovered. Jericho had been deserted a few times over history, usually due to shifting of climates, but it was always repopulated. The Palestinian territories' West Bank has the oldest city in existence currently. The oldest city in the world is currently a home to about 22,000 people.
