The Subaru Impreza is still one of the most affordable cars on the market. However, it needs to be updated, and one will finally arrive this month at the 2022 LA Auto Show. Subaru's American division announced that the 2024 Impreza would be unveiled in Los Angeles during a livestream hosted by Bucky Lasek, a professional skateboarder who also competes in rallycross, and Paris Lasek, his daughter.

A gloomy teaser image that suggested the new Impreza would likely be unveiled as a hatchback was also included with the news. We wouldn't be surprised if the Impreza's trunk gets booted, but considering how many other automakers have killed off the three-box shape in favor of crossovers, it's unclear whether a sedan version will continue to be offered. Bucky has been a fan of Subaru for a long time. In 2012, he joined Subaru Rally Team USA to compete in the Global RallyCross Championship. However, he eventually left the team after the 2016 season. His daughter drives the quirky but incredibly cool Subaru BRAT, which bears the brand name. But will their presence be enough to make the Subaru lineup more exciting? Without an STI variant, the WRX has struggled to sell, and the situation has only gotten worse over the past year. We can only hope that there will be something sporty in the Impreza lineup to please the brand's hordes of adoring fans, given the presence of a former rallycross driver at the reveal. Two years ago, the Impreza's design was updated. We hope that the new model will be a little less generic, even though the design is not particularly memorable. As a reminder, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine in the current 2022 Impreza only produces 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. This engine is available with either a slow-shifting CVT or a five-speed manual transmission. However, given that some of our competitors have dropped the manual because it has a low take rate, we wouldn't be surprised if only an automatic transmission is available.
