Atletico Madrid open to selling Joao Felix as Manchester United eye bumper deal

United's attacking options are limited, and Ten Hag would prefer to bring in a striker in January.

Prior to Thursday's Europa League match against Real Sociedad, the equation for Manchester United to advance directly to the Round of 16 was crystal clear. The Red Devils needed to win by two clear goals to avoid a two-legged knockout tie against a Champions League dropout in the Round of 32.

Instead, United made things difficult for themselves, winning only 1-0 thanks to a first-half strike from Alejandro Garnacho.

Striker scarcity

It was not the outcome Erik ten Hag had hoped for, but it did highlight the importance of the 20-time English champions entering the transfer market in January.United did not travel to Spain with the attacking trio of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, and Antony Martial. The only attacking options available to the Dutch manager were Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford.

With United in desperate need of a goal, the former Ajax manager brought on Harry Maguire as an auxiliary striker. The manager attempted to score a goal using the defender's superior heading ability, but was unsuccessful. It is clear that the Reds require a goalscorer, and this was evident even before the Europa League match, as United have failed to score in numerous matches despite creating numerous chances.

Rashford has been wasteful, Ronaldo's off-field issues haven't helped matters, and Martial has been a constant in the injury department.

A ruthless finisher could completely change the dynamic of the current team, and the manager will be hoping to land one as soon as possible.

And, according to a report in Cadena Ser, Atletico Madrid will consider selling Joao Felix during the January transfer window in order to balance their books. The La Liga giants were recently eliminated from the Champions League, resulting in a significant revenue loss. Together with their plans to strengthen in the winter, they must sell at least two high-value assets.
