Pep Guardiola hints at Manchester City squad change for Chelsea clash in Carabao Cup
In midweek, City will play their third consecutive home game in all competitions, as the League Cup returns for another season.
Pep Guardiola has had tremendous success in the competition during his time as manager of the reigning Premier League champions, winning it four years in a row from 2017/18 to 2020/21.
The visit of Chelsea could provide Guardiola with yet another opportunity to rotate his squad ahead of the final match of the domestic season before the World Cup.
Brentford visit the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a lunchtime Premier League kick-off, and that game may influence Pep Guardiola's thinking about his starting lineup for the midweek match.
Following the weekend's dramatic 2-1 win over Fulham, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was asked for an update on his injured England international duo, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips, both of whom have been recovering from surgery in recent weeks.
"They feel much better," Pep Guardiola said of the pair.
"Yesterday was Kalvin's (Phillips') second full training session with contact with us, and he felt good."Following that, Guardiola revealed that his defensive midfield signing from the summer will return to Manchester City's squad for the visit of Graham Potter's side on Wednesday night.
"He'll be on the bench against Chelsea," the Catalan coach said. "Whether he plays or not, I don't know," he added, "but he will be on the bench." Kalvin is far superior."The match against the London club, however, will come too soon for the recovering full-back Kyle Walker.
The England right-back has been recovering from groin surgery after injuring his groin in the Premier League's 6-3 win over Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola commented on his defender's condition, saying, "I spoke with Kyle (Walker) and he feels good too, but his surgery was later than Kalvin's, so I don't know" (when he will be available).Fans will be well aware that the main goal for the England internationals will be to be available for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which begins in just a few weeks.
Pep Guardiola of Manchester City revealed that he spoke with England manager Gareth Southgate personally in recent days, but that he could not give his managerial counterpart an accurate return date for either of his players.
"I spoke with Gareth Southgate about ten or twelve days ago," he said "Guardiola stated this. "We had a chat, a coffee, him and his assistant, and we talked about them (Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips)," he said. He inquired, and I replied, "I'm not a doctor.""Erling Haaland will be looking for more playing time on Wednesday night, after beginning his road to full match fitness against Fulham on Saturday.
After coming on as a second-half substitute, the 22-year-old won the game for his team with a penalty kick after a previous strike was ruled out for offside.
