ANTI MICROBIAL RESISTANCE, WHY IS IT GAINING SO MUCH ATTENTION?

featured img

MIcrobes are known to be very small, microscopic organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Bacteria and viruses are the most common examples of microbes. Microbes, in the body, may or may not be harmful. In situations where they may cause harm to the body, antimicrobials are usually used to combat them. These antimicrobials may either completely denature them or slow down their normal activities. Antimicrobials express different ways of dealing with microbes. Some target the cell walls, others target the cell membranes, others inhibit the synthesis of DNA and proteins, some even inhibit folic acid metabolism which is crucial for the normal functioning of microbes and among others.

Antibiotics, for example, are medicines that can actually boast of their competence in dealing with bacteria in the body. However, with the fast growth of anti-microbial resistance (AMR), their competence may be put in question. So what is AMR? AMR is a condition whereby microbes adapt to the very good medicines that combat them and develop mechanisms to resist the effects of these drugs on them and hence, making it very difficult to treat diseases caused by these microbes as they still get to stay in the body and carry out their normal activities despite the individual consuming the right drugs. From the definition alone, it is easy to see why the subject has become an interesting area to venture into as any small finding can make a very huge impact. Just imagine the microbes causing Corona Virus developing these AMR mechanisms and resisting the drugs supposed to denature them

For biology inclined individuals with much interest in computational skills, this might be a very great opportunity to put your two interests together to impact society. Whole genome sequencing and various bioinformatic tools are being used and enhanced to fight AMR. It is a very interesting, profitable subject to venture into. And I hope this piece of  writing introduced you to a life changing topic.
