Barcelona alter key January plan after former PL star convinces Xavi
Barcelona was looking for a replacement for Gerard Pique in central defense.
Barcelona's January transfer plans have been altered following the appearance of a surprise candidate from within the squad to cover for Xavi's shortcomings. The Catalan club was looking for a replacement for Gerard Pique, who announced his retirement from football last week. The former Spain international decided to call it quits before La Liga went on hiatus for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Pique's final appearance in the famous maroon and blue kit came last Saturday (Nov. 5) against Almeria at home.
Pique's unexpected departure midway through the season has left Barcelona short on defense, prompting the club to compile a list of options ahead of the January transfer window. Xavi recently confirmed that the club will look to sign a central defender in January.According to Fabrizio Romano, an Italian transfer expert, Athletic Bilbao star Inigo Martinez has been a long-term target for the Catalan club. The Spaniard's contract expires in 2023, and he recently revealed that his long-term future is uncertain due to ongoing contract negotiations with his current employers."I'm happy here, and I'm at ease. Let us say that my future is uncertain, but this is not the time or place to discuss the subject of my renewal "Martinez explained. "The negotiations are ongoing, and the issue is being handled by my representatives, who are doing everything they can for me and Athletic."
However, the emergence of Marcos Alonso as a backup on the left side of central defense has changed Barcelona's January plans. Xavi has been impressed by the former Chelsea full-ability back's to provide cover in the absence of regular center-backs Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, and Ronald Araujo, according to Sport.
Alonso has played at center-back in six of his seven La Liga appearances.
