Xavi recently confirmed that the club will look to sign a central defender in January.According to Fabrizio Romano, an Italian transfer expert, Athletic Bilbao star Inigo Martinez has been a long-term target for the Catalan club. The Spaniard's contract expires in 2023, and he recently revealed that his long-term future is uncertain due to ongoing contract negotiations with his current employers."I'm happy here, and I'm at ease. However, the emergence of Marcos Alonso as a backup on the left side of central defense has changed Barcelona's January plans. Xavi has been impressed by the former Chelsea full-ability back's to provide cover in the absence of regular center-backs Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, and Ronald Araujo, according to Sport.
Alonso has played at center-back in six of his seven La Liga appearances.
