The 2022/23 season is divided into two parts: before and after the World Cup. The first part is now complete, and we can look back and evaluate the players who performed the best during this time.
Robert Lewandowski - 9
Robert Lewandowski struggled a little during preseason, but once the official competitions resumed, the striker was back to his best. The 34-year-old was a key player for us, starting 18 of 20 games and scoring 18 goals. In the games against Mallorca and Valencia, Lewandowski came up big, winning us both games on the road. He adjusted to Barcelona's build-up and pressing, demonstrating that he is the ideal striker for Xavi's system.
However, we cannot give him a perfect score. Robert had some bad nights as well, such as the first game against Bayern Munich or in El Clasico, where he missed some big chances. In addition, he was sent off in the last match before the break.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen - 8.5
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been an absolute beast in La Liga this season, whether it's due to Barcelona's improved defense or his newfound confidence. The German has kept 11 clean sheets in 14 games, conceding only 5 goals - an incredible record for a Barcelona goalkeeper.
However, in the Champions League, the keeper was not at his best, conceding 10 goals in 5 games. Ter Stegen made no obvious errors, but he also didn't make many impressive saves.
Pedri - 8.5
At the age of 19, Pedri is already the heart and soul of Barcelona's midfield. The numbers show that he is our primary creative asset in the middle. When it comes to pre-assists, the Spaniard ranks alongside Kevin De Bruyne and Leo Messi.
Over the summer, Pedri has improved in one key area, as he now attacks the box with more confidence. He has three goals in 19 games this season, a significant improvement over previous seasons.
Ousmane Dembele - 8
On his night, Ousmane Dembele is the most dangerous winger in the world. With 5 goals and 7 assists, he is Xavi's main creative asset up front.
However, Ousmane lacks consistency, which the coach recognizes. He may be unplayable against Athletic Bilbao but lose every other ball against Valencia.
Alejandro Balde - 8
Alejandro Balde, the season's breakout star, has established himself as a key starter ahead of the experienced Jordi Alba and Marcos Alonso. He has three assists as part of Barcelona's impenetrable defense.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his game is his ability to switch sides and play as a right back. Full-backs rarely play equally well on both sides.
Frenkie de Jong - 7.5
Frenkie de Jong was a bench option early in the season, with Xavi preferring Gavi ahead of him. However, as the weeks passed, the Dutchman regained his place and went on to play the final six league games from the start.
Xavi used Frenkie as the pivot in a few games this season, and unlike in previous seasons, the Dutchman looked solid. His goal against Almeria and game-winning assist against Osasuna were the icing on the cake.
Honorable mentions: Kounde and Araujo
Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo played only 10 and 7 games, respectively, due to injuries. However, both were absolutely flawless prior to the September international break.
However, both were outstanding prior to the September international break. We are excited to see how they perform in the second half of the season.
